You may have missed the launch of Facebook Audience Insightslast week, which the company claims will offer more granular customer information to anyone advertising on their platform.

Previously the insights available to advertisers included metrics such as “likes”, “engagement” and “reach”, but with the launch of Audience Insights it’s possible to view an audience by age, gender, education, lifestyle, relationship status, household size, job position, and also by where they currently live and what language they speak.

Audience insights is different to page insights in that its now possible to look at information about your customers across the whole of Facebook, rather than just looking at interactions to your page (likes, shares and comments) which Page insights previously limited you to.

In terms of how this can be used, Facebook provided the example of a women’s luxury fashion brand that may want to raise awareness of the products it sells in-store. The company could used Audience Insights to find out how many potential customers lived near the store, as well as their interests, their past purchase behavior, and how they tend to shop (online vs. offline).

If you’re worried that Facebook Audience Insights will now unravel private information for advertisers to use, the company explained:

We built Audience Insights with privacy in mind. It surfaces aggregated information people already express on Facebook, along with information from trusted third-party partners — like Acxiom — through our partner categories targeting. Like Page Insights, Audience Insights shows information about groups of people without the need to share which individual people are in those groups. This allows marketers to view aggregate and anonymous insights while keeping people’s personal information private.”

Facebook hopes that the enhanced targeting options will now allow advertisers to better reach their desired audience, while also ensuring that users are now shown more appropriate ads that are of interest to them.
