Mobile Ad Spending To Overtake Print And Radio

Mobile marketing will surpass newspapers, magazines and radio in 2014

This year will mark the first time that mobile advertising spending will pass newspaper, magazine and radio spending in the US. It’s no secret that the print media and radio are in decline but 2014 will mark the first time ever that mobile ad spending will surpass some of the more traditional mediums.

According to a new report by eMarketer, mobile advertising revenue will jump an amazing 83% to $17.7 billion. This accounts for 10% of all advertising spending in the States. The rise in mobile advertising has been a quick but steady one. This is the biggest jump in advertising expenditure in the US in a decade – and it’s all thanks to mobile. The increase in investment of 83% (or around $8 billion) this year will push mobile advertising to the third-largest individual advertising venue; merely falling behind television and desktop advertising. On a global scale, mobile advertising now accounts for about a quarter of the total digital marketing spend.

What makes mobile so important?

Mobile is certainly emerging as a serious contender for advertising supremacy, considering it’s growing much faster than desktop. The profit from mobile comes primarily through two main channels – Google and Facebook, the most used widely websites in the world. With Facebook alone, eMarketer predicts that, of the total US ad revenue, 68% will come from mobile. It’s hard to believe that just two years ago investors were reluctant to buy Facebook mobile advertising space, fearing there would be no profit to be made in it.

Advertising in general is still a very profitable industry. This year, it is expected to generate an investment in the region of $180 billion in the US alone – rising to a predicted $220 billion by 2018 – a rise of over 20% over the next four years.
